The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

Minimum Age Requirement:
Participants must be 15 years of age on or before the last scheduled session of the course.

Prerequisite Skills Testing:
Participants must successfully complete three swimming prerequisites to continue in the Lifeguarding course:

• Prerequisite 1: 300-yard Swim – participants must perform a 300-yard continuous swim using the front crawl, breastroke, or combination of both. Swim goggles are allowed.
• Prerequisite 2: Treading Water – participants must tread water for 2 minutes without stopping, using legs only.
• Prerequisite 3: 10 lb Object Timed Event: participants must swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10 lb object from bottom of pool (7-10 feet), return to surface, swim 20 yards on their back to return to the starting point, and exit pool without using stairs or a ladder. Participants must complete outlined skills in 1 minute 40 seconds.

*Inability to pass all prerequisite skills will result in removal from the Lifeguarding course. Participants will not receive a refund for inability to pass prerequisite testing.

Certification Requirements:
Must attend all class sessions, successfully perform all required skills, successfully complete three final skill scenarios; and pass the written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent or better on each section.

Certification Validity:
American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED for Lifeguards-2 year.
