Why do you like health and wellness so much?

I grew up in a community where you worked hard from sun up to sun down.  Growing up I don’t remember anyone exercising, eating healthy, prioritizing sleep, or really anything healthy.  It wasn’t until I was 22 that started to learn that health and wellness wasn’t just for athletes. Quickly I realized I could take the work ethic I learned growing up and apply that to running, lifting, stretching, and proper nutrition.  In my 30’s I would say I’m in the best shape of my life.  It doesn’t come natural and I’ve had to change things up, but I haven’t slowed down yet!  I’m in love with health and wellness because I think you deserve EVERYTHING that you get out of it! I learn something new about myself everyday.

What is your education/background?

I got my AA in Education from Kirkwood Community College and studied Exercise Science/Leisure Services at the University of Northern Iowa.  I’m currently the Fitness Specialist at the Cedar Valley SportsPlex. I’m a Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Group Fitness Instructor, and a Certified Nutrition Coach.  I consistently run 50-70 miles per week with the focus of running ultra marathons.  I also strength train 3 hours a week with the focus on increase muscle mass.  My goal is to not just be a runner, but instead find balance between strength and endurance.

Do you have a training style?

I would describe my training style as a balance between strength and endurance.  I often like to start each session with some kid of cardio like rowing, ski erg, light jogging.  After that most clients will be in the weight room where we will focus on strength.  I would say my normal set/reps range would be 4 sets of 12-16 reps.  I like to push clients to pick weights that make you strong with reps that improve endurance.

Why should someone pick you as a trainer?

When I grew up we hardly had money to keep the lights on, let alone afford a personal trainer. I understand that there are a million things you could spend your money on so I PROMISE that I’ll never waste your money or your time.  If you want to feel inspired, motivated, challenged, and strong… Come to the Cedar Valley SportsPlex!

Why do you like health and wellness so much?

Health and wellness is important to me because we are only giving one body to live in. We have to try our hardest to be happy with ourselves and work towards goals you want to achieve. When you are not happy with yourself, that energy rubs off on the people around you. Health and Wellness is not just exercise and diet, there is a mental and emotional aspect to it as well.

What is your Education/background?

Bachelors in Public Health with an emphasis in Wellness & Fitness, with a minor in Nutrition. In College I interned at a CrossFit gym and became level one CrossFit certified and that’s when I knew I wanted to do personal training!

Do you have a training style?

I specialize specifically in weight loss and strength training. All of my workouts are written tailored to your specific goals! I train clients of all age levels I currently have a client that is 18 and one that is 69. There is no age limit on fitness!  I also offer workouts for off days from training with me as well!

Why should someone pick you as a trainer?

You should contact me if you are looking to make some lifestyle changes, but do not know where to start. We can talk about what your goals are and come up with a plan together to help you reach those goals. Goals do not happen overnight, we will stay consistent together and I will be there for you as a personal motivator even when we are not training together in the gym! I love building relationships with my clients and getting to know their life outside of the gym as well!

Why do you like health and wellness so much?

Leading a lifestyle where you prioritize your health and wellness is key to feeling like your best self. Your health and wellness are intimately connected with your quality of life. When you value these, you are setting yourself up for success. If you have not already started your health and wellness journey, no matter where you are, there is no better time than now to make positive changes. The time will pass regardless, so you might as well make good use of it!

What is your Education/background?

I got my AA degree through Hawkeye Community College, where I focused on health, wellness, and fitness. While in school, I interned at the YWCA, teaching fitness and yoga classes. I also interned at the Cedar Valley Sportsplex, where I job shadowed the previous fitness specialist, personal trainers, and group fitness instructors. I began working at the Sportsplex’s front desk shortly after, and last year (2021), I decided to get my training certification through the American Council on Exercise. I have been exercising consistently for five years (a combination of strength training and cardio), and I’m constantly researching to make sure my clients and I are using the most effective techniques to achieve our goals.

Do you have a training style?

I enjoy working with a wide variety of clients, so the type of training I do varies based on their specific goals. Most of my clients want to lose weight and/or gain muscle. Based on my typical client, we will usually start with an aerobic warm-up (e.g., jogging, biking, cross-training elliptical, etc.), then move on to a dynamic warm-up to prime the muscles we’re about to work. Next, we’ll begin strength training; rep ranges, rest times, etc., all depend on your specific health and fitness goals. Lastly, we’ll end the session with a cool down (e.g., light walking and/or static stretching).

Why should someone pick you as a trainer?

I am passionate about health, wellness, and fitness and very dedicated to helping others achieve their goals. If we run into any obstacles, we will work together to find a solution that fits. Everyone has different reasons for hiring a personal trainer, and regardless of what those may be, my overall goal is to help you make a positive difference in your life.
